D-Rays Need A Shot Of Big-D

Aubrey Huff said something last night about the season having already spiraled out of control. And that it’s no fun, zero fun, to come out to the park every night. Well at 4-28 on the road that’s no surprise.

The chemistry is shot. You just can’t keep the same guys around and hope things improve. Because they won’t.

The only way to inject some hope into this debacle is to call up Delmon Young, put Gomes at DH, and maybe, maybe let Upton play 3B or OF

. If he could handle the position switch then I’d be tempted to try him out. You can’t just leave him at AAA for the next five years and pray he wakes up one day and stops booting the ball. It’s not going to happen. Take a look at what the D-Backs did with Scott Hairston. Once you take BJ away from SS he’ll be able to relax and start hitting the ball like he can. Right now he’s probably afraid to go to the park and risk another tally on that error chart.

As well as he’s played, this team is not going anywhere with Damon Hollins. You don’t need to get rid of him, but he’s a perfect 4th OF. Not a starting CF. There’s no reason to keep Alex Sanchez around. And Huff isn’t an OF, he’s a 1B or DH. I’m not sure why Alex was brought in to begin with, but I’m guessing LaMar thought he’d be trade bait at the deadline. I can see a team like the Cards or Yankees keeping him around as a pinch-runner or spare part. But that’s the last thing this D-Rays team needs.

The pitching will still be terrible. But at least it might get to the point where fans can say “The guys played hard tonight.” Or “They’re having fun out there.” You can be sure that Delmon would come up and hustle. Who knows, maybe it would be infectious. Rickie Weeks is about to lead a charge in Milwaukee. Maybe Delmon could do the same thing for the Rays.

The one thing you can’t do is keep shuffling the lineup. Clear the excess baggage and trim this thing down.
