Why Gavin Floyd Needs The Roy Halladay Treatment
The Phils need to do with Gavin Floyd, what the Blue Jays did with Roy Halladay in 2001: change his arm angle.
In 2000 Roy Halladay posted a 10.64 ERA, 2.2 WHIP. In 67 IP he surrendered 107 Hits, Kd 44, BB 42, and his OBA was .347.
In 2001 he was 3.16 ERA/ 1.16 WHIP/ 105 IP/ 97 Hits/ 96 K/ 25 BB.
In 2002 he won the CY Young.
Halladay and Floyd are very similiar pitchers. They both throw a low-90s 2-seam fastball, and both use an excellent curve as an out pitch.
Having watched Halladay collapse, I can tell everyone on this board that his problems were exactly like the issues Floyd’s dealing with right now. His mechanics were flat out bad. He missed over the plate. His 2-seam fastball had decent movement but still got pounded. And he couldn’t throw the curve for strikes.
Then the Jays decided to rebuild him. They sent him to A ball to forget everything he knew about pitching. They teamed him up with a good pitching coach. And they changed his arm slot to get more movement on his pitches.
Suddenly he’s back in the majors. His fastball is moving all over the place. His curve is his strike-1 pitch and his out pitch. And his mechanics are smooth. Plus he goes on to pitch 239, then 266 innings.
