Tipoff On The Tipster

“Don’t take it too seriously. You know the Tipster never does.”

I’ve been wanting to write this one up for a long time, but since I had absolutely nothing to share with you I kind of put it off for a while. Now I think I’ve got a lead, so I decided to sit down and type this one up.

All us Fan590 listeners know the Tipster. He’s the gravel-throated guy who comes on around 5 p.m. every day, breaks down a few good Pro-Line picks, then disappears into thin air. He seems to be a pretty good handicapper, but the real interest in the Tipster goes way beyond his picks. Just who is this guy?

Does the Tipster work for the OLGC, or The Fan? Well, his e-mail address Tipster@fan590.com suggests the latter. Search the net and you’ll find almost no trace of this guy. That is, until now.

It seems the Tipster’s real name is Philippe Doucet. There’s some conjecture that it might be Steve Rapp. And that seems plausible. But unless they’re digitally altering his voice I just can’t hear the resemblance. Now I’m not 100% sure if that’s true, because information on this guy is impossible to find. But does it really matter anyway?

That said, I’m not exactly sure what the Tipster really does. It seems kind of strange that he would come in for 5 minutes minutes a day to tape his segments. Does he mop floors? Is he an off-air producer? Who is he?

Well, the truth is I don’t know. The Tipster’s a secretive guy. You can e-mail him if you want, but don’t expect a full bio.
