Kevin Curtis: Your New Brandon Stokley
Kevin Curtis is 5′10″. He weighs 186 pounds. He’s 27. He’s a devout Mormon. And he’s the Rams’ new Ricky Proehl.
Kevin’s caught 28 passes this year for 362 yards. That’s an 12.9 yard average. It also projects to a 1000 yard season.
Tory Holt is the Rams downfield threat, and Isaac Bruce is going to ply the left sideline. But when it comes to tough yardage in the middle of the field that job looks like it now belongs to Curtis.
The Rams defense is terrible and last week’s 400+ yard passing game from Bulger is going to be routine for this team. Look for 30+ completions/week and 5-7 receptions, 50-75 yards, from Curtis. You’ve got to throw when you’re playing catch-up.
Find your TDs elsewhere. Kevin caught 2 six-pointers last year and I wouldn’t expect more than 6-7 this season. But depending on the health of Bruce and whether they can run the ball effectively that number could balloon to 8-9.
Slot receivers are always going to be free for yardage, but the big plays usually happen on the sidelines. It’s pretty tough to knife up the middle through safety coverage and end up in the endzone. The exception comes during Red Zone possessions where a receiver can run the skinny post and sneak behind a defender. That seems like a Mike Martz ploy, but I haven’t seen it happen yet.
I think Kevin has a big week VS. the Seahawks and comes out with a score. You might want to pick him up and keep him on your bench as a 5th receiver. There’s a chance he pays big dividends this year.
If you’re looking for other top possession receivers take a look at Jabar Gaffney and Eric Parker.
