Larry Rodriguez vs. Kenny Rogers
We all remember Larry Rodriguez. Well, maybe you don’t recognize the name, but you remember the story: he’s the TV cameraman who was shoved by Kenny Rogers.
Rodriguez filed a lawsuit yesterday in a Tarrant County, Texas court, alleging Rogers injured him in an unprovoked attack.
Now the only thing missing from this story is the six-figure prize Rodriguez and his lawyer, Stephen Pipkin, are looking for. You know it has to be big money because Rodriguez was, after all, shoved.
Because this whole incident was caught on film it’s out there for all of us to judge just what happened. Rogers got a little peeved, shoved Rodriguez, then shoved him again. So what? It’s not the kind of thing you’d encourage, and technically it’s assault. But is it worthy of a lawsuit?
After the altercation Rodriguez was immobilized on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital. If you see this guy at Denny’s don’t stand behind him in line. The slightest contact and EMS shows up on-scene. Keep in mind that car crash victims and NFL players with neck/spinal cord injuries are carted off on the field. This guy was pushed.
The thrust of the lawsuit aims at the Rangers’ handling of Rogers, whom Pipkin alleges was a burgeoning threat to the safety of all media and team personnel. Sure, he might have pushed someone.
The point is we’re all faced with situations on a day-to-day basis that leave us wishing we could level lawsuits and criminal charges with the flick of a wrist. But the guy who cuts you off in traffic is getting away with it. And the guy who cuts in line at the bagel store is getting away with it. But when you’ve got money you better watch who you offend. Because you’ve got it. And they want it.
