Packing It In

Watching Duce Staley “high-step” his way into the Lambeau endzone had to be the low point of my NFL Sunday. The Packers have always been a sentimental favourite of mine and that TD was just the exclamation point on a horrific season. By the way, it’s only Week 9. There are still 7 more Sundays of Samkon Gado left.

Why was this the single most offensive moment of the day? Well, for one thing, Staley is not good. I never liked the guy in Philadelphia. And I’ve certainly enjoyed watching him on the sidelines in Pittsburgh. The guy looks about 35 pounds overweight, making the Steelers RB tandem of Staley/Bettis the only “Fat backs” duo in the NFL. His 15 rushes for 76 yards came against a run-defense starting tackles who weigh less than the backs they’re trying to stop. Wait until you see Justin Griffith rush for 40 yards against the Pack next week and you’ll know what I’m talking about. If Atlanta posts fewer than 200 yards rushing it’ll be a bad day.

Still, the worst part of the game was seeing Brett Favre turf it on that final possession. He’s throwing to bad receivers who can’t get separation. But his accuracy was off on that last drive. The ball Driver tipped that led to the final Steelers TD was a joke. That’s what Favre is dealing with right now: WRs with bad hands who are actually causing INTs. That’s bad enough. But he’s playing like he’s in a Winners’ parking lot with some pals after school. He won’t run for first downs if he can loft the ball into the endzone. If you’re wondering why he’s turning the ball over so often, there’s your reason. When there’s no separation the DB can get his hands on most everything. Deep balls have to be right on target or they’re going to get picked off. Their best bet is to stick with those crossing patterns. But Favre is a hero and he’s not going to fall into a Redskins offense at this stage of his career. It’s either all-or-nothing. And so the Packers have outscored their opponents by 9 points over 9 games, and they’re 2-5.

The Packers can’t play defense. With the injuries they’ve sustained they just don’t have the personnel to stop any rushing attack. What they do have is a QB who is going to drive fans crazy with fumbles and interceptions, but keep the games closer than they should be. That makes Donald Driver, Antonio Chatman, and Bubba Franks decent fantasy options for the rest of the year. Samkon Gado isn’t good enough to play in the NFL, and this team is going to have to score through the air. Favre isn’t afraid to rack up INTs, so, at this point, you’re guaranteed decent yardage.

The biggest concern is injury. Green Bay’s offensive line is pretty bad and Favre isn’t excactly spry. But he’s got too much pride to sit. Chances are you’re going to get a Kurt Warner performance: lots of yards, a TD, and a couple INTs plus a fumble. And if he decides to play through any kind of sprain or break then you’re in big trouble. Teams are going to be blitzing every down. It could get ugly.
