Do Sports And Reality Mix?

In the wake of another Todd Bertuzzi-induced fiasco (this one stemming from his appointment to the Canadian Olympic Team), I figured it’s time to ask a question I’ve rarely heard discussed. I tuned into the FAN590 this morning (the local Toronto-based talk-radio station), and was amazed, again, to hear the depth of people’s emotional investment [...]

Breaking Down Team Canada

We have about 35 million people in this great country of Canada and the fact that so many of them were glued to their television, radio or the Internet yesterday to see the live announcement (the simple fact that there was a press conference covered by all 3 is something unto itself) of Team Canada’s [...]

Corey Patterson Scouting Report: My God, He’s Jose Cruz II

When Corey Patterson went .266/24 HR/91 Runs/72 RBI/32 SB in 2004, everyone thought this was the start of something big. Why? Because Patterson, then 24, was a former 1st round pick who had gone .298/13 HR/49 Runs/55 RBI/15 SB in 83 games before tearing his ACL in 2003. Those numbers translated to a 30/30 season. [...]

Delmon Young Scouting Report: Great Golden God

Of all the scouting reports, of all the players on the Internet, you had to pop into this one. To me, that’s like going to a psychic to see if the new IPOD’s going to check your heart-rate and blood-pressure. Sure it is. And Delmon, well, how many home runs do you want?
The name that [...]

Anything In A Name?

I’ve had this idea for a while, so just humour me. Say you’re dragged into a fantasy draft for the 2006 Broward County High-School Basketball League. You know absolutely nothing about the players. You’re not even from Broward. And all I do is give you a list of names without any stats or height/weight numbers. [...]

Yao! It’s The Minor Injuries That Kill You

Yao’s Big Toe, And The Weird (And Maddening) World Of Sports Injuries
Am I advocating amputation? Let’s back up for a second. By now you might have heard that Yao Ming, all 7′6″ of him, is going to be out “several weeks” with an infected toe. He underwent surgery today (20/12/05) in Houston and is going [...]

Zach Duke Scouting Report: Another NL Lefty

In 2003 Cliff Lee went 3-3, with a 3.61 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 44:20 K:BB in 52 IP. In 2004 the ERA ballooned to 5.43, the WHIP to 1.50, and the K:BB to 161:81. He gave up 188 hits in 179 innings, and finished 14-8.
Zach Duke, the Pirates’ soft-tossing lefty probably won’t follow [...]

2006 Champagne Series: Your Fantasy Baseball Breakout Players

Kelvim Escobar Scouting Report
Here’s the first in a series of profiles on 2006 fantasy baseball breakout candidates. Who knows how many I’ll cover, but I like the idea of going in-depth on guys you’ll see short blurbs on in your fantasy magazines.
I’m taking a shot at Kelvim Escobar as my first breakout candidate of the [...]

Jose Capellan Scouting Report

What happens when a 1-pitch pitcher loses 5 mph off his fastball? For Jose Capellan it meant a step-down from the next Bartolo Colon to the next Edwin Jackson. Capellan, a 24 year old beast out of the Dominican Republic had a wake-up call in 2005. After coming back from Tommy John surgery to post [...]

New NHL: Goalzapoppin’

We’re 34 games into the 2005/2006 NHL season and the twine’s really poppin’. If you’ve been watching (or gambling) pretty hard you may have noticed another trend livening up the Canadian-ballet: overtime. Through 30-34 games we’ve seen 98 overtime losses. That means, essentially, that we’ve seen 98 overtime games. It’s not like that average old [...]

Cliff Lee Scouting Report: Call Me Andy

Andy Pettitte’s career ERA is 3.78. He cracked the sub-3.00 barrier only once during his 9 years in the AL. That was in 1997 when a 25 year old Pettitte went 18-7, 2.88, 1.24 WHIP, with 166 Ks in 240 innings. His batting average allowed was .256. Fast forward 7 years and look who’s posting [...]

Cuba Out of World Baseball Classic?

In an excellently written piece, Jack Curry of the New York Times has brought to light an issue that I had not heard about with respect to the World Baseball Classic that is to be held March 3-20 in the US, Puerto Rico and Japan. The issue is that the United States Treasury Department told [...]

Red Wings All Class

This week was different if you were a Detroit Red Wing. Not because the NHL had decided to loosen up on its new rules or because Steve Yzerman had announced he wouldn’t be playing for Team Canada, but because the players had one of their “Dad, Male Family Member or Mentor” join them for the [...]
