David Garrard Week 1: Vince Young, Braylon Edwards, And Charlie Frye

Here’s an interesting thought: David Garrard is Vince Young in 3 years. They’re both horses who play a similar game, but Garrard throws a better ball.

Garrard put up 142 total yards yesterday against the Browns. He was 11-20, 116 yds 2 TDs, 1 INT, plus 7 rushes for 26 yards. If Ernest Wilford bothers to show up he has 4 TDs and 160 yards passing. Wilford dropped a couple balls in the endzone that went for FGs.

The low point of yesterday’s game had to be Braylon Edwards tearing his ACL mid-way through the 4th quarter. Edwards was going up for a deep sideline pass and came down on a planted right leg. He caught 5 balls for 86 yards and 2 TDs before leaving the game and was clearly the Browns’ #1 option at WR. Cleveland has a middling schedule for their 4 remaining games, so Edwards should have been good for another 2-3 TDs and 20-25 receptions.

Charlie Frye really surprised me. The 3rd rounder out of Akron was 13-20 for 226 yards and 2 TDs. He was a good college player, but I figured him for another Gus Frerotte. He was throwing the ball all over the field and taking deep shots he looked capable of hitting. He even flashed some scramble and toss ability. It looks like the Trent Dilfer era is over.

Frye is 24, and stands 6′4″ 228. He averaged 8 yards/attempt last year at Akron, posting a TD:INT ratio of 18:8 and a completion % of 63.6. He threw for 3,549 yards in 2003, and looks like a pretty good rookie.
